18-year-old girl dies after allegedly jumping into well in Kwara
The Kwara Fire Service has recovered the corpse of an 18-year-old girl, Waliyah, from a domestic well in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred around 6pm Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at Ile-Olodo Ita Merin - Alore area of Ilorin.
According to Daily Trust, the teenager suddenly jumped into the well to the bewilderment of some residents shortly after having a friendly conversation with neighbours in the compound.
Spokesperson of the service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, said the recovered corpse has been handed over to her family.
“On the 7th of November 2023, at 18:46 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to an emergency rescue operation in the Ile-olodo Ita Merin - Alore area of Ilorin, Ilorin West Local Government Area Kwara State,” the statement read.
“Tragically, an 18-year-old girl named Waliyah had drowned in a domestic well. The dedicated personnel of the Kwara State Fire Service successfully recovered her lifeless body and respectfully handed it over to Alhaji Adisa Akanbi Magaji of Ile Olodo, Ita-Merin, Ilorin.”
Reacting to the sad incident, the Director of the service, Prince Falade John, stressed the importance of safety consciousness to the general public.
Prince Falade issued a stern warning to parents and guardians, urging them to refrain from sending their children to fetch water from domestic wells.
